What Tradies Generally Claim
General information based on ATO guidance. Individual eligibility depends on your specific circumstances — always verify with a registered tax agent.
Tools & Equipment
Hand tools, power tools, test equipment and trade-specific gear are generally deductible. Items over $300 are depreciated over their effective life.
Work Vehicle & Travel
Driving between job sites, to suppliers, or carrying heavy equipment is generally claimable. Logbook or cents-per-km method applies.
Protective Clothing & Uniforms
Safety boots, hi-vis vests, hard hats, gloves and work pants with logos are generally deductible. Laundering costs too.
Licences & Registrations
Trade licence fees, contractor registrations and industry body memberships (e.g. Master Electricians, NECA, HIA) are generally deductible.
Phone & Internet
Work-related portion of mobile phone, data plans and any apps used for job management, quoting or scheduling.
Training & Courses
Trade certificates, WHS training, working at heights, white card renewals and courses directly related to your trade work.
Home Office
If you do admin, quoting or scheduling from home, a portion of home office costs may be deductible using the ATO fixed rate method.
Ute & Vehicle Costs
If your ute or van is used wholly or mainly for work, running costs including fuel, insurance and servicing may be claimable.
